Swaffham Raceway: Family friendly fun

East Anglia has always been a hotbed for short oval racing and one of the resurgent venues in the area, Swaffham Raceway, is preparing for a packed out calendar of events throughout 2018 which will stretch deep into December.

There is racing at the oval on almost every weekend between now and the week before Christmas to satisfy the most demanding of spectators.

Promoter Pete Gould says investment in the venue has already reaped rewards and the family-friendly atmosphere at the track means fans are supporting the meetings in their droves.

The Tarmac venue has been in operation for more than 20 years, and it offers an interesting challenge for racers with two different types of corner bordered by a concrete wall.

The track has no camber and the two turns – the ‘road bend’ and the ‘pits bend’ – present a varied challenge. “The corners are very wide but they are different to each other – it is a bit like the old Aldershot used to be,” says Pete. “Drivers need to have a bit of caution on the ‘road bend’. It is wide and fast, but that can create a bit of push on the cars and drivers need to be careful how they come out of that turn to make sure they carry the right amount of exit speed. It can make or break a lap, so it is vital to get it right.”

The track, which is 15 miles from King’s Lynn, has a full roster of championships. It runs its own Hot Rod category, the hugely popular banger racing classes, Stock Rods, Rookie Rods and Superstox and it is noted for its success with the Ninja Sprint Karts, the category designed to get younger racers into the sport. Children from the age of six can enter Ninja Kart racing.

“Ninja Sprint Karts has proved to be a really strong class for is, and that is something we want to encourage,” says Pete. “We know that not every youngster who enters is going to win, so we try to make it as inclusive as we can.

“For example, we allow all the entrants in Ninja Karts to get a trip around the track on the pace car and we give them all little presents. It is just the small touches, but if we can keep old of these racers when they finally decide to move up the formulas, then that will be great for us in the longer term. It is all about nurturing the next generation.”

And that is the attitude that pervades the racing at Swaffham: it is about accessible motorsport in an enjoyable environment and that extends to the people who come through the gate too, not just those on the circuit.

“We try to make things as welcoming as possible at the track, and everyone knows everyone,” adds Pete. “There is a great family atmosphere and that keeps brining the competitors back and the spectators too. We are building up quite a following, and that encourages the racers to put on a show too. It has been a real success.”

A large part of that success has been the on-track action. Banger racing has, if you will pardon the pun, been a huge hit at Swaffham too.

Some of the biggest names in the sport regularly compete on the oval, and that has tempted others to come to the venue and try to topple the best of the best.

“The numbers we are getting for bangers are strong, and they can often be a highlight of the meetings,” says Pete. “The top names that we get always bring a following, and that just means other drivers turn out to pit themselves against them. It works really well.”

The circuit features a greyhound track around the outside of the car track, and an increasing number of dog meetings will be part of the schedule during 2018 as well. A new grandstand is in the pipeline to add to the improving facilities at the circuit and the future looks very bright.

But even before that, there is a host of action to enjoy. Highlights of the year ahead will include the East Anglian Championship Weekend on June 16/17 and the two Gold Roof Weekends, which will take place on August 11/12 and August 25/26. To enjoy the experience first-hand, make sure you get trackside.
