Toby Sowery has lost his BRDC British Formula 3 race two win at Brands Hatch after his car was found to have been broken technical rules.
His Lanan Racing car was found to have a gearbox which didn’t meet the regulations and has been excluded from the results, as well as losing his fastest lap which would have put him on pole for race three.
Team principal Graham Johnson said: “The differential, there are two ways it can be fitted, drive and over-run with five per cent difference.
“We had the gearboxes rebuilt [by an outside company] and we didn’t check that the box had been built correctly, it’s been like that all season.
“Toby has taken it [losing the win] incredibly well. I was close to tears because I’m very pro-scrutineering and legality. Five years and this will be the first one in F4 or F3 we’ve been excluded.
“It’s an oversight, everybody agrees there’s nothing in it, no advantage but because it’s not black and white correct the clerks had no option but to exclude us.”
Also excluded from race two was Jeremy Wahome – who had finished sixth – after he drove his Chris Dittmann Racing car “in a manner incompatible with general safety” after a collision with Ben Hingeley.
