The first stage on Friday morning was a shocking demonstration of everything that’s wrong with Rally Poland. I know, I was there and I watched as fans overran the woefully under-supported marshalling force.
As these pictures show, ahead of the first car (above image), everything is as it should be. Then, within three or four cars, the spectators have come from behind the safety of the treeline and marched on the side of the road. The marshals (both of them…) did their best to stop them, but faced with 50 or so, what could they do? As more and more started to cross the road at will – ignoring the marked and manned crossing point – I took that as my cue to leave (shortly after taking second image below).
It was came as little surprise that this stage was cancelled in the afternoon.
Trust me, after the last round, Michele Mouton deserves a commendation. And a lie down.
